Finding the right legal help in an attorney or law firm is about more than finding someone with years of experience or fancy degrees.
You want to have someone reliable, dedicated and accessible in your corner.
You deserve someone who is there in your time of need.
Over the years, we’ve learned a lot about how to show up in this way and be a partner to our clients. We’ve learned what’s best to look for when hiring legal help and how to manage the relationship once you’re in it to get the most out of it.
So, let’s talk about our top ten tips for finding successful legal representation, from start to finish.
1- Research. Research. Research
Finding the best possible legal help for you starts with finding lawyers and/or law firms whose outlooks, goals, and approach are aligned with yours.
Try this: pick out 3-5 quality candidates in your area that specialize in the type of law you’re looking for help with. PS:LinkedIn is your friend here, and don’t hesitate to rely on the word of mouth of your community to round out your search.
Once you’ve got a few names, dig in and find out if what they can offer and what you are looking for are in the same ballpark. (Pro tip: if you can’t tell from their website or online presence, skip to the next).
2- Set Clear Expectations
Once you’ve narrowed down your top picks, it’s time to communicate clearly about what think you are looking for.
Discuss your situation, the type of help you think you need, your budget and any other factors with each potential law firm.
This will help you and the right fit agree on a plan for how to work together and what kinds of costs you can expect to incur.
Pro tip: the right fit should be able to guide you and explain their processes clearly in this step!
3- Reputation Says It All
Reputation is not only a good indicator of an attorney or law firm’s skill set, but also speaks to their level of professionalism and flexibility.
Do a little digging online, in local Facebook groups or Google reviews. You can also ask them directly for a list of references.
Save yourself headaches down the road, and find a team that is well-respected by their peers and former clients right off the bat.
4- Find an attorney who is a good fit for you
While fancy degrees and impressive track records are nice, it’s mostly important to find an attorney who you feel comfortable working with and who you can trust.
Make sure to evaluate your top candidates’ communication styles, personalities and availability before deciding who to go with.
You need to be able to be honest, transparent, and fully communicative with your legal help, so find one who you feel comfortable with above all else! Human to human connection is what we’re going for.
5- Consider their Experience
It’s obvious that attorneys who have experience handling cases similar to yours, will have less lag time getting up to speed. Be sure they are coming in with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively represent you.
6- Location. Location. Location
Don’t underestimate how beneficial it is to have an attorney who is familiar with the local court system, judges and community.
Consider the location of your attorney/law firm’s office in reference to your home, your job and the local institution that will be involved in your case.
Pro tip: don’t forget that virtual is now a very common option!
7- Don’t be afraid to negotiate
Many firms are willing to negotiate their fees or work out a payment plan that can work for you. Don’t be afraid to ask about options!
8- Get a written fee agreement
Your legal help will most likely cover this, but make sure to get a written contract/fee agreement, outlining the services they will provide and the costs involved.
This not only helps prevent misunderstandings and unexpected expenses down the line, but it also helps avoid getting off on the wrong foot!
Make sure you fully understand the agreement and feel free to ask questions if you don’t! Your lawyer is your partner, they will be happy to explain it!
9- Keep communication brief but frequent
Keep in touch with your attorney and ask for updates on your case and/or deliverables as you need!
We can’t say it enough, your lawyer is your confidant, your partner, they are there for you, so communicate as you need.
10- Vocalize your needs
Once hired, your attorney is there for you, so be sure you keep them apprised of changes, concerns, updates, etc.
Vocalizing what’s happening and what you need is a surefire way to making sure you and your law support stay aligned!
